Rohit Sharma will script history on Thursday (April 18) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he will make his 250th appearance in the tournament’s history. Rohit, who is one of the seven players to play in every season of the IPL, will join MS Dhoni to register 250 IPL appearances while he dons the colours of Mumbai Indians. Already a record six-time winner of the IPL, Thursday’s landmark appearance will cement his legacy as one of the greats of the game.

The current India captain started his IPL journey in 2008 with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers where he would find his roots. His debut season with DC did not go well as the franchise finished bottom of the league with two wins despite having star names like Shahid Afridi, Adam Gilchrist, Chaminda Vaas, Andrew Symonds and others. However, that setback did not stop him from achieving big things as he won the IPL in his second season with DC in South Africa in 2009.
While there was no success in the 2010 season, Rohit had already made a name for himself and was a fan favourite. Soon he would make his homecoming with Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2011 mega auctions. His contributions to the Chargers included 1,170 runs in 45 matches, at an average of 30.78, and a strike rate exceeding 131.
Legend at Mumbai Indians
Making his debut for the side in 2011, it was not until the 2013 season that Rohit really made the stage his own. Having won the Champions League T20 in 2011, it was in 2013 that Rohit won his first IPL title with Mumbai Indians. He took over the captaincy at the midway point of the season from Ricky Ponting and led them to their first IPL title.
Rohit would follow that success with four more IPL titles, including 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. MI’s win in 2020 also saw them become the second franchise after Chennai Super Kings to retain the IPL title. Currently, with six IPL titles, Rohit is the joint-most successful player alongside Ambati Rayudu in the history of the IPL.
Ahead of IPL 2024, it was announced that Rohit will no longer lead the side in the competition, but that has done no harm to his reputation as he continues to serve Mumbai Indians.
At the time of writing, in 249 matches in IPL, Rohit has 6472 runs which include two hundreds and 42 fifties. He averages 30.10 with the bat and has 272 sixes in the completion’s history. Interestingly, with 15 wickets in IPL history, he also accounts for two hat-tricks.
