Pakistan mystery spinner to join Birmingham-based side ahead of The Hundred stint with Birmingham Phoenix
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Warwickshire have secured the signing of Pakistan’s rising mystery spinner Usman Tariq for the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast 2026, strengthening their bowling attack ahead of a busy white-ball season. The 28-year-old will be available for the full T20 Blast campaign before transitioning to Birmingham Phoenix for his stint in The Hundred, ensuring continuity at Edgbaston across both competitions.
Tariq’s rapid rise in international cricket has made him one of the most exciting T20 bowlers to watch. In just under two years since his senior T20 debut, he has already represented Pakistan in nine T20Is, claiming 18 wickets at an impressive average of 11.16 and maintaining an economy rate of 6.66. Known for his deceptive variations—including off-breaks, googlies, and flicked leg-breaks—Tariq also stands out for his distinctive pause in delivery, which often unsettles batters.
His strong performances in franchise cricket, particularly in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), have opened doors globally, with appearances in tournaments such as the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), ILT20, and Abu Dhabi T10. The Warwickshire deal marks his first experience in English county cricket.
Warwickshire’s performance director, James Thomas, expressed confidence in the signing, highlighting Tariq’s impact potential and tactical awareness in modern white-ball cricket. He also emphasized the strategic alignment between Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix, noting that the shared setup at Edgbaston allows for better player integration and performance consistency across tournaments.
Tariq, meanwhile, shared his excitement about joining the squad, stating that he is eager to bring energy and entertainment to the team and connect with fans during the summer season.
The signing comes as Warwickshire reshuffle their squad following the departure of Moeen Ali to Yorkshire. The club has added reinforcements including Jordan Thompson, while Australian all-rounder Beau Webster will join Tariq as the other overseas player.
With a blend of fresh talent and experienced additions, Warwickshire will be aiming to improve on last season’s quarter-final exit and mount a stronger challenge in the 2026 Vitality T20 Blast.
