From his very first appearance in Test cricket, Joe Root looked completely at home on the international stage. Calm, composed and technically gifted, the Yorkshire batter quickly developed into the backbone of England’s batting across all formats.

Root’s journey from a fresh-faced debutant in Nagpur to England’s leading run-scorer has been defined by remarkable consistency and adaptability. Through captaincy pressures, packed schedules and changing eras, he has remained one of the most dependable batters in world cricket.

The numbers

Tests: 13,777 runs at 50.83, 73 wickets
ODIs: 7,330 runs at 48.54, 28 wickets
T20Is: 893 runs at a strike rate of 126.30

With a classical technique, sharp judgement and soft hands, Root has succeeded in every condition and against every bowling attack. Once criticised for converting too many starts into fifties rather than centuries, he transformed that narrative by producing a flood of hundreds in recent years while also expanding his strokeplay with innovative shots like the reverse scoop.

Root now stands alone in England cricket history with the most runs and most centuries in both Tests and ODIs. His achievements extend beyond batting records — he was a central figure in England’s historic 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, has appeared in a T20 World Cup final and even owns a Test five-wicket haul. He also holds the record for the most catches by an outfielder in Test cricket.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann recalled instantly recognising Root’s exceptional talent during England’s 2012 tour of India.

Swann revealed that after bowling just two deliveries to Root in the nets at Nagpur, he realised the youngster possessed rare quality against spin — an area where many English batters traditionally struggle.

“He was reading the spin, reading the dip and playing with ease,” Swann said. “I thought this lad was class.”

Swann later described Root as “the best player England have ever produced,” a statement supported by the records Root continues to rewrite.

Whether anchoring innings, rescuing England in difficult situations or entertaining crowds with his trademark smile and fearless strokeplay, Root has cemented his place among the finest international cricketers of the modern era.
