The contest will be key for the Men in Green who could face elimination from the tournament if results go against them. India, USA in pole position
As things stand, before the Pakistan-Canada match, India and the USA occupy the top two spots with four points each and are in pole position to enter the Super Eight stage. Pakistan can only reach a maximum of four points in the group stage even if they win their remaining two matches. However, if rain plays spoilsport as it did during their match against India, then they will be on the brink of elimination.
Points will be shared in case the Pakistan-Canada match ends in a washout, meaning Pakistan will have one point after three matches and could reach a maximum of three points even if they beat Ireland in their final group match. With three points, Babar Azam’s men will be unable to catch both India and the USA in the points tally and thereby will face elimination.
A defeat for Pakistan against Canada will also see them getting knocked out of the group stage with one match to go. This result also means that Canada will give themselves a good chance of reaching the Super Eight. However, a washout will mean they could also reach only a maximum of five points and will need a helping hand to reach the Super Eight.
What happens if India-USA match ends in washout?
In case the India vs USA match on Wednesday ends in a washout, then also Pakistan face elimination. With the match assumed to be washed out, both India and the USA will attain five points each after three matches as points will be shared. This will mean that Pakistan and Ireland won’t be able to finish in the top two and get eliminated. In case, Pakistan beat Canada and the India-USA match ends in a washout, the trio of Pakistan, Canada and Ireland will get eliminated with one match still to be played.
