Co-hosts West Indies have announced their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup with Rovman Powell set to lead the side in his homeland. The 15-member squad did not have too many surprises and there was no international return of Sunil Narine despite impressing in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). The squad also consists of Alzarri Joseph and Narine’s KKR teammate Andre Russell as the hosts bid to win their third T20 World Cup.

With much speculation surrounding the return of Sunil Narine, chief selector Desmond Haynes and Head Coach Daren Sammy on Friday (May 3) did not pull the rabbit out of the hat and opted to go with recent international players. Alzarri Joseph will be deputy captain for the side with places for Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein and Rajasthan Royals’ Shimron Hetmyer.
The T20 World Cup will be an emotional moment for the West Indies fans after having missed out on qualifying for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The hosts won the T20 World Cup in 2012 when they beat Sri Lanka in the final while England were on the receiving end of a dramatic thriller in 2016 when the Caribbean side won their second title.
Interestingly, West Indies have opted not to name reserve players for the T20 World Cup and still have time until May 25 to make changes. So there is still an opportunity to retain Narine who as things stand is a retired international player. West Indies are in Group C along with Papua New Guinea, Uganda, New Zealand and Afghanistan.
West Indies will play all their matches in their homeland despite the USA being the co-host. They will start their T20 World Cup journey against Papua New Guinea on June 2 before facing debutants Uganda on June 8.
