Simon Helmot has stepped down as head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), opting to pursue new career opportunities despite having two years remaining on his contract.

Helmot, who is currently part of the coaching setup at Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026 as an assistant coach under Daniel Vettori, had been leading the Renegades’ WBBL side since 2021. His tenure was highlighted by a historic achievement in 2024, when he guided the team to their maiden WBBL title.

Following that success, Helmot had extended his contract for three more seasons. However, after the 2025 campaign—where the Renegades finished fifth—he has decided to move on in search of a new challenge.

Renegades general manager James Rosengarten praised Helmot’s long-standing contribution to the club, acknowledging both his on-field success and his influence off the field.

“Simon has been an extraordinary Renegades figure for a long time and has given so much to our club. He has not only delivered success on the field but has also had a profound impact on the culture and environment around the team,” Rosengarten said.

He further highlighted Helmot’s strong connection with players, staff, and fans, emphasizing the lasting legacy he leaves behind within the Victorian cricket community.

The 54-year-old has been closely associated with the Renegades since their inception in the Big Bash League during the 2011–12 season, when he served as the men’s team’s inaugural head coach for four years. Beyond Australia, Helmot has built a strong reputation as a global franchise coach, including a title-winning stint in the Caribbean Premier League.

With his departure, the Melbourne Renegades will now begin the search for a new head coach as they aim to build on their recent success and remain competitive in upcoming WBBL seasons.
