Sam Robson delivered a masterclass in patience and control, scoring a resilient 162 to guide Middlesex County Cricket Club to a high-scoring draw against Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in their County Championship clash at Wantage Road.

Batting for over six hours, Robson showcased his experience and composure, striking 21 boundaries while carefully punishing loose deliveries. Resuming the final day at 109 for 1 alongside Max Holden, Middlesex built a solid platform with a 165-run second-wicket partnership that effectively shut the door on Northamptonshire’s hopes of forcing a result.

Northamptonshire began the day seeking early breakthroughs through seamers Ben Sanderson and Harry Conway, but the Middlesex duo weathered the initial pressure with ease. Holden contributed a fluent 86 before falling just before lunch to legspinner Calvin Harrison.

Middlesex skipper Leus du Plooy then accelerated the scoring with an unbeaten 66, forming a commanding 152-run stand with Robson. The pair ensured their side stayed firmly in control, extending the lead and eliminating any remaining threat from the hosts.

Robson brought up his century with a composed single, continuing his fine knock past 150 with elegant stroke play, including crisp drives and controlled cuts. His innings finally ended when Lewis McManus produced a stunning one-handed catch behind the stumps.

Despite Middlesex reaching 353 for 3 and building a substantial 285-run lead, the match drifted toward a draw due to significant time lost earlier in the game—63 overs were wiped out by bad light across the first three days. Poor visibility once again forced an early end on the final day, with both teams agreeing to shake hands after tea.

In the end, Northamptonshire’s disciplined bowling effort, supported by contributions from Nathan McSweeney, Liam Guthrie, and Saif Zaib, wasn’t enough to break through consistently on a batting-friendly surface.

Robson’s innings remains the standout performance of the match, underlining his value at the top of the order and steering Middlesex to a well-earned draw in challenging conditions.
