Bangladesh coach emphasizes workload management for rising pace star Nahid Rana while addressing middle-order concerns and pitch strategy
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has stressed the importance of carefully managing the workload of emerging fast bowler Nahid Rana, calling him a crucial “trump card” for the national team. With Rana consistently clocking speeds above 150 kph and delivering strong performances in the Pakistan Super League, Simmons highlighted the need to balance performance with long-term fitness.
Rana has been in impressive form, picking up seven wickets in his last three PSL matches. His momentum follows a standout ODI series against Pakistan, where he claimed a remarkable five-wicket haul and continued to trouble batters with his pace and aggression.
Simmons explained that modern workload management is key to sustaining Rana’s impact. The coaching staff aims to ensure the young pacer remains fit and effective whenever he takes the field. According to Simmons, protecting such a valuable asset is essential while also expecting consistent performances at the international level.
Beyond Rana’s rise, Bangladesh are also reassessing their playing conditions, particularly at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Traditionally known for spin-friendly pitches, the team management is now pushing for better batting surfaces to accelerate overall team development. Simmons believes that playing on quality wickets will help players improve more quickly and adapt to international standards.
However, Bangladesh’s middle-order struggles remain a concern. Towhid Hridoy has yet to fully translate his domestic success into consistent international performances, while players like Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Afif Hossain are still working to cement their roles.
Simmons acknowledged that many Bangladeshi batters face challenges adjusting from top-order roles in domestic cricket to middle-order positions at the international level. He emphasized that adaptability is crucial, noting that players must evolve based on team requirements rather than rely solely on their domestic roles.
Despite these challenges, Simmons remains optimistic. He pointed out improvements in Bangladesh’s finishing ability, particularly in the final overs of matches, as seen in their recent performances. With a focus on player development, better pitch conditions, and smart workload management, Bangladesh aim to build a more balanced and competitive side moving forward.
