Ollie Robinson has revealed that a timely message from England head coach Brendon McCullum has reignited his ambition to return to the Test side, putting him firmly back in contention ahead of the upcoming home season. The Sussex captain, who last played a Test in 2024, says he is in the best mental and physical shape of his career and ready to make a strong comeback.

Robinson, 32, boasts an impressive Test record with 76 wickets at an average of 22.92. However, his journey with England faced a setback following a difficult tour of India, where his relationship with team management, including captain Ben Stokes, reportedly became strained. Despite this, recent communication from McCullum and managing director Rob Key has signaled that the door to international cricket remains open.

At the start of the county season, McCullum personally reached out to Robinson, reassuring him that selection was still within reach. Rob Key also offered encouragement, urging him to continue taking wickets and proving his case through consistent performances. These gestures have played a crucial role in motivating Robinson during the current domestic campaign.

Robinson has been a standout performer for Sussex, contributing both with the ball and the bat. Although his bowling figures this season—11 wickets at 28.54—may not fully reflect his impact, he showcased his all-round ability with an unbeaten century that rescued his team from a difficult position. His performances have kept him in contention alongside players like Sam Cook, who is also being considered as a reliable seam option for England.

England’s bowling unit is currently in a transitional phase following the retirements of legends James Anderson and Stuart Broad. The team is seeking a dependable leader who can anchor the attack while complementing the faster bowlers. Robinson’s height, skill, and aggressive approach make him a strong candidate to fill that role.

Off the field, Robinson has undergone significant personal changes that have contributed to his renewed focus. After a challenging period in 2023, he has found stability in his personal life and is now married, with a child on the way. This clarity, he says, has helped him rediscover his passion for the game.

Fitness, a key concern during his previous stint with England, has also improved considerably. Robinson has worked hard to enhance his conditioning, addressing the issues that once limited his effectiveness. His recent performances suggest he is now better equipped to handle the demands of Test cricket.

Looking ahead, England are expected to announce their squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand later in May, with the first match scheduled at Lord’s in June. Interestingly, Robinson made his Test debut against New Zealand at the same venue in 2021, and he is hopeful of scripting another chapter in his international career.
