Former Zimbabwe Women’s captain Mary-Anne Musonda has officially announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades. A key figure in Zimbabwe cricket since 2006, Musonda played a pivotal role in shaping the women’s game in the country.

Musonda represented Zimbabwe in 58 T20 Internationals (T20Is) and 16 One Day Internationals (ODIs). Even before Zimbabwe Women gained official international status, she had already featured in over 100 matches, showcasing her long-standing commitment and consistency.

In a statement released by Zimbabwe Cricket, Musonda explained that her decision was influenced by a combination of factors, including timing, physical demands, and long-term sustainability. At 34, she reflected on the challenges of maintaining peak performance and the impact of continuous high-level competition on her body.

Appointed captain in 2018, Musonda led Zimbabwe Women during a crucial phase of growth. Under her leadership, the team made significant strides on the international stage. One of her most notable achievements came in 2021 when she became the first Zimbabwean woman to score an international century, registering an unbeaten 103 in an ODI against Ireland.

Throughout her career, Musonda scored five T20I half-centuries and earned recognition not just for her performances, but also for her leadership and vision. She emphasized that captaining Zimbabwe was about more than just results—it was about inspiring change, building opportunities, and paving the way for future generations of female cricketers.

Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani praised Musonda’s contribution, calling her a pioneer of the women’s game and highlighting her professionalism, dedication, and lasting impact on the sport.

Beyond international cricket, Musonda also broke new ground by becoming the first Zimbabwean player to participate in the Fairbreak T20 tournament, further elevating her influence on the global stage.

Mary-Anne Musonda’s retirement marks the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to inspire the growth of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe. Her contributions have not only elevated the national team but also helped create a stronger foundation for aspiring young cricketers across the country.
