Marco Reus to bid farewell to Borussia Dortmund after 2023-24 season; end 12-year stay with club

It will be the end of an era for Marco Reus at Borussia Dortmund as he bids farewell to the club after the 2023-24 season.  The announcement was made official on Friday (May 3) with Reus set to depart after a potential Champions League final, if Dortmund beat Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinal. Having signed from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012, Reus served the club for 12 years during which he led the club to several heights including winning domestic honours.

Reus bids farewell

“I already know that it will be difficult for me to say goodbye at the end of the season. And yet I’m glad that there’s clarity now and we can concentrate fully on the important final games that are still outstanding.

“We have a big goal in mind and we all want to achieve it together. For this we need each and every one of our incredible fans, whom I would like to expressly thank for their incredible support over the years,” said Reus in a video released on the club’s website.

Reus started his youth career with Dortmund before moving to Rot Weiss Ahlen in 2006. He would spend three years with the side before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2009. It was at Mönchengladbach where he would get his Bundesliga debut and hit the ground running with eight goals.

Despite impressing in the 2009-10 season, Reus was unable to earn a call-up to the Germany national side for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, it was in 2011 that he was handed his debut by then-Germany manager Joachim Low. He would feature for the side in the Euro 2012 and FIFA World Cup 2018 having missed Germany’s 2014 World Cup winning campaign with a groin issue. He was also injured during the Euro 2016 in France.

During his time at Dortmund Reus won DFB Pokal on two occasions in 2017 and 2021 and finished runners-up in the Bundesliga on multiple occasions including the 2022-23 season where his side lost the title on the final day despite having the lead heading into the final day. He also lost the 2013 Champions League final with Dortmund but could make amend this year as Dortmund are a draw away from the final in London’s Wembley Stadium.
