Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has thrown his full support behind two of the team’s biggest stars, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav, calling them “match-winners” despite their underwhelming performances in the IPL 2026.

Mumbai Indians have endured a difficult season so far, sitting near the bottom of the points table with just four points from eight matches. A lack of consistency, particularly from key players, has hampered their campaign. Suryakumar Yadav has managed 162 runs at an average of 20.25 with a strike rate of 140.86, while Jasprit Bumrah has picked up only two wickets at a high average of 132.

Despite the dip in form, Jayawardene emphasized that both players have a proven track record of winning matches single-handedly and deserve patience. He highlighted that even elite performers go through challenging phases but have the resilience to bounce back.

“They are match-winners, and they are human,” Jayawardene said, acknowledging the pressure both players put on themselves to deliver. He added that the team management is focused on easing that burden, reminding them that fluctuations in form are a natural part of the game.

The MI coach also pointed out that the team’s struggles are more about overall inconsistency rather than individual failures. He praised the professionalism, work ethic, and honesty of his players, expressing confidence that continued effort will eventually yield results.

Looking ahead, Jayawardene stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that every remaining match is crucial for Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes. He believes the squad has the determination and experience to respond under pressure and keep fighting for a turnaround.

As the tournament progresses, Mumbai Indians will rely heavily on their star performers rediscovering form, with Jayawardene confident that Bumrah and Suryakumar will once again rise to the occasion.
