Ryana MacDonald-Gay produced a dream performance on her return from injury, claiming sensational figures of 6 for 11 to guide Surrey to a tense win over Durham in a low-scoring thriller.

Playing only her third match since recovering from a spinal lumbar injury, the Surrey pacer ripped through Durham’s batting line-up and recorded the best bowling figures in women’s domestic T20 cricket this season.

Durham were bundled out for just 102, with Bess Heath top-scoring with 28. MacDonald-Gay came close to a hat-trick on three separate occasions during her fiery spell, while debutant Bethan Miles impressed with 2 for 10.

Despite the modest total, Durham fought brilliantly to stay alive in the contest. Heather Graham claimed 3 for 19 and Trudy Johnson picked up two wickets as Surrey’s chase turned chaotic.

Surrey slipped to 68 for 6 despite being ahead of the required rate, with wickets falling regularly under pressure. But Alice Monaghan once again held her nerve, finishing unbeaten on 20 to calmly guide Surrey home with 20 balls remaining.

MacDonald-Gay said the moment felt extra special after months of recovery and hard work.

“I couldn’t imagine something as magical as this would happen,” she said after the match. “Having it happen here at the Kia Oval makes it even more special. This winter I just hoped to get back to how I was last year, and today gives me confidence moving forward.”

From injury comeback to match-winning heroics, it was a night Ryana MacDonald-Gay will never forget.
