The 2026 edition of the Lanka Premier League will feature two major innovations, with teams now allowed to use an Impact Player substitute and required to include at least one Under-23 player in their playing XI.

The changes have added a new layer of strategy to squad construction, forcing franchises to carefully balance experience with youth while identifying young players capable of making an immediate impact. The challenge was heightened by the limited availability of Sri Lanka’s leading Under-19 talents, many of whom are set to be involved in a series against India in July.

Ahead of the tournament, injury concerns emerged around Pathum Nissanka and Matheesha Pathirana. While Nissanka has been included in Sri Lanka’s touring squad for the West Indies, his workload is being managed and he is expected to undergo surgery later this year to ensure full fitness for India’s tour of Sri Lanka.

The league will also have a fresh look in 2026, with four of the five franchises operating under new ownership and branding. Only the Dambulla Sixers retain their previous identity. The revamped teams are SC Jaffna Kings, Galle Gallants, Kandy Royals and Colombo Kaps.

The player draft lasted less than four hours, with teams required to select at least 18 players and allowed up to two additional picks. Players were divided into Platinum, Gold, Classic, Associate and Emerging Under-23 categories, each carrying different salary bands.

Among the headline pre-signings were Vijay Shankar, Angelo Mathews, Moeen Ali, Wanindu Hasaranga, Litton Das and emerging pace sensation Eshan Malinga.

The draft also saw high-profile selections for Avishka Fernando and Charith Asalanka, while overseas stars such as Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mohammad Nawaz, Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan added further depth to the competition.

With new tactical rules, fresh ownership groups and a strong mix of international and local talent, LPL 2026 is set to usher in a new era for Sri Lanka’s premier T20 competition.
