Lionel Messi admitted he was “very angry” with himself after missing a penalty, but the Argentina captain responded in trademark fashion by scoring twice and creating FIFA World Cup history during his side’s 2-0 victory over Austria in Texas on Monday.

The 38-year-old forward delivered another memorable performance for the defending champions, helping Argentina secure qualification for the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Messi’s opening goal made him the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history with 17 goals, before he added his record-extending 18th goal in second-half stoppage time.

Speaking after the match, Messi revealed his frustration following an early penalty miss. “Today there was a moment where I was very angry about the penalty because I missed and I struck it very badly,” he said. “Luckily we were able to turn the situation around, take the lead and take three very important points.”

Despite being regarded as one of football’s greatest players, penalties have occasionally troubled Messi on the biggest stage. He previously missed a spot-kick against Poland during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and also failed to convert from the penalty spot at the 2018 tournament.

Any concerns about Messi’s fitness heading into the competition have quickly disappeared. The Inter Miami star arrived at the World Cup with minor concerns over a hamstring issue but has been in sensational form. After scoring a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina’s opening 3-0 win, he once again proved decisive against Austria.

Messi redeemed his penalty miss in the 38th minute when he calmly found the net to give Argentina the lead, sparking celebrations among thousands of fans at the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Austria remained competitive throughout the contest and created a few opportunities of their own, but Messi sealed the victory with his second goal deep into injury time.

Reflecting on the challenge posed by Austria, Messi praised his opponents and highlighted the competitive nature of the tournament. “A very hard victory. We knew it was going to be a match of great intensity,” he said. “This World Cup is full of evenly matched games. No one gives anything away.”

Argentina are now in a strong position to finish as Group J winners. They will officially top the group if Jordan fail to defeat Algeria. A first-place finish would see Argentina face the runners-up from Group H in the knockout stage, with Uruguay currently occupying second place.

With qualification secured, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni may consider resting Messi for the final group-stage match against Jordan. However, the veteran forward made it clear that Argentina remain focused on maintaining their perfect record.

“We’re Argentina and we’re always going to look to win against any opponent,” Messi said.

As Argentina continue their title defence, Messi’s historic achievements and match-winning performances are once again proving why he remains one of the most influential players in world football.
