Outstanding contributions from Katie Levick, Mady Villiers and captain Hollie Armitage helped the hosts chase down a target of 180 with 13.2 overs to spare and strengthen their hopes of a top-three finish.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Surrey made a bright start through openers Bryony Smith and Rachel King. Smith struck consecutive boundaries early on, but Durham quickly seized control when Villiers dismissed her with the very first ball of her spell, taking a sharp caught-and-bowled chance.
King responded with the first six of the match, dispatching a delivery from Levick over the ropes. However, Levick struck back soon after, trapping King lbw. Surrey’s troubles continued when debutant Ivreen Dhaliwal chipped Abi Glen straight to mid-on, leaving the visitors under pressure.
Alice Davidson-Richards attempted to rebuild the innings but fell to Villiers after picking out Armitage in the covers. Surrey’s problems deepened immediately when Paige Scholfield was run out following a costly mix-up with Jemima Spence.
Villiers continued her impressive spell by trapping Aylish Cranstone lbw, reducing Surrey to a precarious position. Spence and Izzy Sidhu offered brief resistance, but Durham’s bowlers maintained their grip on the contest.
Levick returned to devastating effect, claiming back-to-back wickets by bowling both Sidhu and Laura Harris. The experienced leg-spinner then removed Bethan Miles, while Sophia Turner wrapped up the innings by dismissing Dani Gregory. Surrey were eventually bowled out for 179, with Villiers finishing with three wickets and Levick matching that tally in a superb bowling display.
Chasing 180, Durham suffered early setbacks as Mia Rogers was trapped lbw by Bryony Smith and Emma Marlow fell to Davidson-Richards. The hosts were further dented when Villiers was caught at mid-off off Miles’ bowling, while Emily Windsor also departed to Miles, leaving Durham struggling at 81 for four.
With the chase in danger of derailing, captain Hollie Armitage and Australian all-rounder Heather Graham combined to steady the innings. The pair gradually rebuilt before shifting gears, putting Surrey’s bowlers under pressure.
Armitage led from the front, finding the boundary regularly and bringing up a composed half-century. Graham provided excellent support at the other end as the duo ensured there would be no further hiccups.
Armitage remained unbeaten on 76, guiding Durham safely to the target alongside Graham. The comprehensive victory earned Durham a valuable bonus point and kept them firmly in contention for a top-three finish in the Metro Bank One Day Cup standings.
