Leicestershire produced a dominant all-round performance to secure an emphatic innings-and-39-run victory over Yorkshire inside three days at Uptonsteel County Ground, Grace Road. The win marked the Foxes’ first top-flight County Championship victory since 2003 and their first Division One triumph after returning to the top tier as Division Two champions last season.

Entering the match on the back of four consecutive defeats and sitting at the bottom of the Division One table, Leicestershire defied expectations with a commanding display. Their bowling attack, led by Josh Davey, Ajaz Patel, and young pacer Alex Green, dismantled Yorkshire’s batting lineup, with each bowler claiming three wickets in the second innings.

Yorkshire resumed the third day on 32 for 2, still trailing by 236 runs after centuries from Rehan Ahmed and Nick Kelly had put Leicestershire firmly in control. Their hopes of a comeback quickly faded when Sam Whiteman fell early, brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Ben Cox off Josh Davey.

The visitors then suffered a major setback as 19-year-old Alex Green struck twice in four deliveries. The towering fast bowler first dismissed Matthew Revis before removing Yorkshire captain Jonny Bairstow for a three-ball duck, bowling him through the gate. Green’s impressive pace and accuracy continued to trouble the batters throughout the innings.

James Wharton briefly resisted but was eventually bowled by New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel, who found a gap through his defense. George Hill and Dom Bess attempted to rebuild the innings with a fighting partnership, helping Yorkshire reach 121 for 6 at lunch.

However, Leicestershire tightened their grip immediately after the break. Patel trapped Hill lbw with the first ball of the afternoon session before Ben Green removed Hassan Ali shortly afterwards. The wickets left Yorkshire staring at another heavy defeat.

Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty offered some late resistance, frustrating the hosts with a stubborn stand. Bess struck seven boundaries in his 40 before edging Patel to slip, while Moriarty played the innings of his career, remaining unbeaten on 51. His maiden first-class half-century included 11 boundaries and briefly delayed the inevitable.

The final wicket eventually fell when Alex Green bowled Jack White for 21, sealing a memorable victory for Leicestershire. Green finished with three wickets, adding to the maiden first-class scalps he claimed in the first innings, while Patel and Davey also completed three-wicket hauls.

For Leicestershire, the result represents a significant boost in their fight to stay in Division One. For Yorkshire, who began the season with ambitions of challenging for the title, a third defeat of the campaign raises concerns as they find themselves edging closer to the relegation battle than the championship race.
