RR head coach addresses Riyan Parag vaping incident and team culture, emphasizes responsibility and focus ahead of clash with Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Rajasthan Royals (RR) head coach Kumar Sangakkara has admitted that recent controversies surrounding the team have not reflected well on the franchise but assured that necessary actions have already been taken. Speaking ahead of RR’s upcoming match against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, Sangakkara emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and accountability within the squad.
The most recent controversy involved RR captain Riyan Parag, who was caught vaping in the dressing room during a match against Punjab Kings. The incident led to Parag being fined 25% of his match fee and receiving one demerit point. Earlier in the tournament, RR manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder was also fined INR 1 lakh by the BCCI’s anti-corruption unit for using a mobile phone in the dugout during a game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Addressing these issues, Sangakkara stated that any form of controversy is “not a positive reflection on the team.” However, he reiterated that both incidents have been handled appropriately by the franchise and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He highlighted that RR continues to promote a strong team culture built on clear values, with constant reminders to players about their responsibility towards the franchise.
On the field, Rajasthan Royals have had a solid IPL 2026 campaign so far, currently sitting fourth on the points table with six wins from nine matches. Despite this, Riyan Parag’s batting form has been under scrutiny. The young captain has managed just 117 runs in nine innings, averaging 14.62 with a strike rate of 124.46. His highest score this season remains 29, which came in the same match against Punjab Kings.
Sangakkara, however, backed Parag’s leadership and potential with the bat. He praised the captain’s fearless approach in the previous game, where his quick innings helped shift momentum in RR’s favor during a challenging chase of 223. According to Sangakkara, Parag’s batting ability is unquestionable, and he simply needs time and freedom to perform.
The RR coach also advised Parag to separate his batting from captaincy responsibilities. He stressed that Parag should focus on playing as a batter without the added pressure of leadership while at the crease, allowing him to express himself freely and contribute effectively to the team’s needs.
With momentum on their side, Rajasthan Royals will look to continue their strong run when they face Delhi Capitals at their home ground in Jaipur on May 1.
