IPL 2024: WATCH | Dinesh Karthik’s controversial LBW decision in RCB vs RR

The Indian Premier League (IPL) eliminator match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday (May 22) saw another umpiring horror involving RCB’s Dinesh Karthik. The incident happened in the 15th over when Karthik was given out Leg Before Wicket (LBW) but the third umpire changed the decision to not out.

Avesh Khan bowled an inswinger to Karthik and the batter, playing his first ball, was given out by the on-field umpire. Karthik reluctantly took the review and the third umpire, after seeing the footage, deemed it not out.

The third umpire said that the ball hit the bat first much to the shock of RR dugout and commentators as well. Have a look at the incident below:

Reacting to the decision, former India coach Ravi Shastri said on air: “Dinesh Karthik was clearly out. Absolutely shocking decision.”

Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer posted a picture of ultra-edge and called out the umpires.

Karthik, nonetheless, couldn’t make use of the life and made just 11 off 13 balls, falling in the 19th over. RCB eventually finished with a moderate 172/8 in 20 overs.

Earlier, RCB made a cautious start in the eliminator owing to some great bowling by RR bowlers, especially Trent Boult in the powerplay. Boult also took the wicket of RCB skipper Faf du Plessis (17 off 14 balls) as RCB finished the powerplay at 50/1.

Virat Kohli was next to fall to spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the eighth over before Cameron Green (27 off 21) and Rajat Patidar added 41 runs in the next five overs for the third wicket.

Ravi Ashwin dismissed Green to break the partnership before the veteran spinner sent back Glenn Maxwell for a golden duck on the very next ball.

RCB had added 25 runs more to their total when Patidar (34 off 22) also departed in the 15th over. Mahipal Lomror’s innings of 32 off 17 balls then took RCB to a respectable total.
