IPL 2024: Sanju Samson given out controversially in DC contest, argues with on-field umpires – WATCH

There was chaos in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) on Tuesday (May 7) after Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson was given out controversially. Samson  batting on 86 was adjourned out in the 16th over, which turned the game on its head. The moment saw a change in momentum of the match as Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals by 20 runs to stay alive in the IPL 2024 Playoff race.

On the fourth ball of the 16th over, Samson hit a shot in the long-on region which was bound for a six. However, Shai Hope at the long-on caught the ball while struggling to stay in the field of play. However, with replays on offer, it looked otherwise as an angle showed Hope twice touching the advertisement holdings at the boundary line.

The third umpire was called to check whether the fielder had touched the boundary line or not. However, third umpire Michael Gough upheld the on-field decision to give Samson out on 86. Fans were seen fuming at the decision while Samson was unable to challenge the decision as it was already referred to the third umpire.

The RR skipper was then seen arguing with the umpires but with no option left, he had to leave the field. Coach Kumar Sangakkara was also seen frustrated with Samson’s dismissal and temporarily asked Samson to hold his walk.

The wicket took its toll on the outcome of the match as DC won the match by 20 runs as they restricted RR to 201/8 in their 20 overs. After Samson’s dismissal, RR went from 162/3 to 201/8 which saw them lose five wickets in 4.2 overs and add just 39 runs.

The win for DC now sees them stay in the Playoff race as they have 12 points from 12 matches and face Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their remaining matches.

RR stayed on 16 points and were unable to reclaim the top spot in the IPL 2024 standings from Kolkata Knight Riders. They are next in action on Sunday against Chennai Super Kings with a win assuring them a top-two finish which also guarantees them two shots to reach the IPL 2024 final.
