IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant fined 1.2 million rupees after DC’s win over CSK. Here’s why

Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant was fined $15,000 (INR 1.2 million) for his team’s slow over-rate in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). DC, however, went on to win the match by 20 runs on March 31, which was their first victory of the season. This was also DC’s first match at their second home in Vizag.

The league issued a statement on the incident which read: “Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain, has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash with Chennai Super Kings at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 31.”

“As it was his team’s inaugural offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct concerning minimum over rate violations, Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs,” it further added.

As for the match, DC posted an above-par total of 191/5 in 20 overs. Openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw started with a full-fledged attack, adding 93 runs for the first wicket. After Warner (52) and Shaw (43 off 27) were out, skipper Pant took the onus of the innings, scoring 51 off 32 balls.

DC could have posted a bigger total had it not been for CSK bowler Matheesha Pathirana’s 3/31 in four overs, including a double-wicket over.

While chasing, CSK were never in the hunt as they couldn’t keep up with the required run rate. Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar were clinical for DC, picking up 2/21 and 3/21, respectively. Towards the end, CSK wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni did entertain the fans with an unbeaten 16-ball 37, but it wasn’t enough.

The loss was first for CSK in three games but they still are second on the 10-team points table.
