IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans end Rajasthan Royals’ unbeaten run in last-ball thriller

Gujarat Titans (GT) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by three wickets in a last-ball thriller on April 10 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. With the loss, Royals’ four-game unbeaten run also came to an end. Needing 35 off last 12 balls in a chase of 197, Rahul Tewatia (21 off 11) and Rashid Khan (24 off 11 not out) added 38 runs in 14 balls to get GT over the line from nowhere. Rashid then hit the winning four with GT needing two to win on the last ball after Tewatia got run on the second-last ball of the match.

Gujarat started well before RR’s Kuldeep Sun derailed the chase with three wickets in two overs. GT’s openers Sai Sudharsan and skipper Shubman Gill added 64 runs for the first wicket before Sen trapped Sudharsan (35) LBW in the ninth over. Rain stopped the play for a few minutes before Sen came back to dismiss Matthew Wade and Abhinav Manohar in the 11th over. Sen, however, gave away 20 run in his last over (19th over of the innings) which eventually proved decisive in the end.

Vijay Shankar (16 off 10) added 33 runs with Gill but Chahal cleaned bowled him to further dent GT’s chase. Skipper Gill was next to go back, again off Chahal, after scoring a fighting 72 off 44 balls. GT’s impact player Shahrukh Khan played a cameo of 14 off 8 but it was Tewatia and Rashid who brought GT back in the game.

Earlier, Gujarat won the toss and elected to field first against RR, which have been unbeaten in the tournament so far. GT started well by keeping both RR openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler, in check. Jaiswal was eventually caught behind off Umesh Yadav after throwing his bat around for a 19-ball 24.

Buttler also departed soon after Jaiswal and RR finished the powerplay with 43/2. Skipper Sanju Samson then joined Parag at the crease and the duo smashed all GT bowlers around the park. They added 130 runs for the third wicket in 13 overs before Parag was dismissed.

Shimron Hetmyer then played a cameo of 13 off 5 as RR finished at 196/3 in 20 overs. Skipper Samson stayed unbeaten on 68 off 38 balls. For GT, spinner Rashid Khan was sensational, giving away just 18 runs in four overs and taking a wicket as well. All other GT bowlers were sent to cleaners with a minimum economy of 9.25 by Spencer Johnson.
