French Open: Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff enter third round with straight-set wins

World number two Jannik Sinner eased into the third round of the 2024 French Open on Wednesday (May 29), with a straight-set win over Frenchman Richard Gasquet on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The match lasted a little over two hours where Sinner won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The Italian is now just four wins away from becoming the world number one for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, US sensation Coco Gauff also entered the third round with a 6-3, 6-4 over Tamara Zidansek.

Talking about Sinner’s clash, he seemed in control for most parts of the contest. However, he was seen struggling with his hip in the final set. Thus, Gasquet made him work hard for every point but the Australian Open champion eased past his opposition in 2 hours and 14 minutes. With rain leading to cancellations on other courts, the Sinner-Gasquet clash didn’t see any rain break, thanks to the roof on Centre Court. The 22-year-old Sinner will now lock horns with Pavel Kotov of Russia, who defeated Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) in the second round.

On the other hand, Gauff put up a clinical show as well to reach the third round of the women’s singles at this year’s French Open. She went past Slovenian player Zidansek 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round at the Roland Garros for the fourth year in a row. The match lasted for an hour and 31 minutes.

While Gauff won in straight sets, she didn’t have it all easy. She conceded a 2-1 lead in the opening set before bouncing back in style. In the second and penultimate set, the 20-year-old had a 4-2 lead before Zidansek levelled scores at 4-4. Eventually, Gauff was the better player and she ended the game in the second set itself.

Gauff will now take on the winner of the match between China’s Yafan Wang and Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in her next round.
