The Australian all-rounder struck an unbeaten 57 off 28 balls as the Foxes chased down 180 with more than two overs to spare.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Ashton Turner produced a match-winning unbeaten half-century to guide Leicestershire Foxes to a four-wicket victory over Sussex Sharks in the Vitality Blast at Hove, helping his side secure an important result after a difficult start to the campaign.
With both teams having managed just one win from their opening five matches, the contest carried added significance. Sussex looked set for a commanding total after a dominant opening partnership between Harrison Ward and Dan Hughes, but another dramatic batting collapse proved costly as the hosts were bowled out for 179 in 19.5 overs.
Ward was the standout performer for Sussex, smashing a career-best 69 that included five sixes. Alongside Hughes, he added 98 runs in just nine overs, putting the Sharks in a strong position. However, once Ward fell attempting to attack left-arm spinner Liam Trevaskis, the innings unraveled rapidly.
Trevaskis and Turner tightened the screws through the middle overs, restricting scoring opportunities and forcing mistakes. Hughes departed for 25, while Trevaskis claimed two wickets as Sussex lost momentum and wickets in quick succession. A late partnership between Tom Alsop and Tom Price briefly revived the innings, but Sussex suffered another collapse at the death, losing their final four wickets in the space of six deliveries.
Chasing 180, Leicestershire’s innings was steady rather than spectacular in the early stages. Regular wickets kept Sussex in the contest, and when the Foxes slipped to 118 for 5 in the 13th over, the match remained finely balanced.
That was when Turner took control. The Australian all-rounder combined with captain Ben Green in a decisive partnership that shifted momentum firmly in Leicestershire’s favour. The pair added 41 runs from just 20 balls, easing the pressure and reducing the required rate dramatically.
Turner remained unbeaten on 57 from only 28 deliveries, striking six boundaries and three sixes in a powerful innings that marked the 20th T20 fifty of his career and his second of this season’s Blast campaign. He fittingly finished the chase with 14 balls remaining, ensuring a comfortable victory for the visitors.
For Sussex, the defeat followed a familiar pattern. Strong starts from the opening pair have repeatedly failed to translate into victories, with the Sharks once again unable to capitalise on a dominant position. Debutant Sean Hunt impressed with two wickets but struggled for consistency, conceding several wides and no-balls on an otherwise disappointing evening for the hosts.
Leicestershire’s victory was built on disciplined bowling, sharp fielding for most of the match, and Turner’s composed finishing act, which ultimately proved the difference between the two sides.
