Centuries from Jack Wildermuth and Matt Renshaw seal historic 258-run chase against Perth Scorchers at the Gabba
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Brisbane Heat opener Jack Wildermuth described the night as “one of the best cricket nights of my life” after his unforgettable unbeaten century helped script a record-breaking Big Bash League (BBL) run chase against Perth Scorchers at the Gabba. Wildermuth and Matt Renshaw combined in a stunning 212-run partnership to chase down an imposing target of 258, the highest successful chase in BBL history.
Wildermuth remained unbeaten on 110 off 54 balls as Heat cruised to an eight-wicket victory with one ball to spare. Still processing the magnitude of the moment, he admitted the win felt “pretty surreal.” His batting partner Renshaw was equally outstanding, scoring 102 off 51 deliveries in an innings filled with power and composure.
Renshaw, who smashed nine sixes, echoed Wildermuth’s disbelief after the match. “Still don’t really believe it,” he said. “A lot of goosebumps, but it’s an incredible effort.” Together, the pair hit 18 sixes and became the first duo to score centuries in a T20 chase, rewriting the record books in front of their home crowd.
Heat’s task looked near-impossible early on when Colin Munro fell to the first ball of the innings. At that stage, match predictors gave Brisbane just a 4.78% chance of victory. What followed, however, was one of the most extraordinary batting displays in BBL history, as Wildermuth and Renshaw dismantled the Scorchers’ bowling attack with fearless strokeplay.
The duo kept communication simple, focusing on maintaining the required run rate of around 13 an over. Heat raced to 54 in the powerplay, crossed 100 in just 49 balls, and reached 131 for 1 at the halfway mark, leaving 127 to get from the final 10 overs. From there, the chase only gathered momentum.
Renshaw, batting at No. 3, led the early assault with a rapid 29-ball fifty before accelerating to his century, striking five fours and nine sixes. Although he was run out in the 16th over, the damage had already been done. Wildermuth stayed till the end, guiding Heat home after Max Bryant had retired hurt earlier in the innings.
The flat Gabba surface and short boundary played a role, but both batters capitalised brilliantly. Earlier, the same conditions had allowed Finn Allen and Cooper Connolly to propel Perth Scorchers to 257, setting the stage for a high-scoring thriller.
Renshaw, named Player of the Match, was quick to credit Wildermuth for the partnership, praising his “never-say-die attitude.” Wildermuth, in turn, reflected on how much the opportunity meant to him, especially after battling hamstring injuries earlier in the season.
The remarkable win not only earned Brisbane Heat their first points of the BBL season but also provided a massive confidence boost. With a historic chase behind them, Heat will now look to build momentum and push deep into the tournament, carrying belief born from one of the greatest nights in BBL history.
