England allrounder Rehan Ahmed has officially joined Birmingham Phoenix, becoming the franchise’s first direct signing for the 2026 season of The Hundred. The 21-year-old moves from Trent Rockets, who finished as runners-up in the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Rehan Ahmed enjoyed a strong campaign with Trent Rockets last season, picking up 12 wickets and scoring over 180 runs, showcasing his value as a genuine allrounder in the 100-ball format.

Phoenix Begin New Era With Rehan Ahmed Signing

ESPNcricinfo had earlier reported Birmingham Phoenix’s interest in Rehan, and the deal has now been confirmed. The signing marks the beginning of a new era for The Hundred, as teams operate under private ownership for the first time.

Rehan is the first player signed by Phoenix performance director James Thomas and new men’s head coach Shane Bond. Under the revised rules, franchises can directly sign or retain up to four players before the auction, scheduled for March 2026.

Strong All-Format Impact

Known for his leg-spin variations and fearless batting, Rehan Ahmed has impressed across formats. He played a key role in Leicestershire’s County Championship Division Two title, taking 23 wickets at an average of 19 and scoring heavily with the bat, averaging 50.67, including five centuries.

Rehan Ahmed on Joining Birmingham Phoenix

Speaking about the move, Rehan said:

“The vision and strategy set out by James and Bondy was something that I really wanted to be a part of. Birmingham Phoenix is an ambitious franchise with big plans, and Edgbaston is an amazing place to play cricket. I’m really looking forward to next year and hopefully helping the team challenge for silverware in The Hundred.”

Phoenix Management Praise the Signing

James Thomas described Rehan as a player who perfectly fits the franchise’s long-term strategy.

“He is one of the most highly rated players in the country and has the ability to make a huge impact with both bat and ball. Even at this early stage of his career, his talent is clear, and we believe he will be a key player for Birmingham Phoenix next season.”

Recent Injury and International Update

Rehan recently returned early from England Lions’ tour of Australia after suffering a leg muscle strain during a warm-up match ahead of the first Ashes Test in Perth. He has since returned to Australia to feature for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL).

In the Hurricanes’ opening match against Sydney Thunder, Rehan conceded just five runs in his only over and scored 2 runs off 5 balls in a four-wicket win.

Rehan Ahmed has played 23 international matches for England, including five Tests, and continues to be regarded as one of England’s most promising young allrounders.
