WPL 2024: Grace Harris’ unbeaten knock helps UP Warriorz register consecutive wins; GG lose three in a row

WPL 2024, UPW vs GG, Today Match Highlights: UP Warriorz have registered their second consecutive win in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after beating Gujarat Giants by six wickets at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday (Mar 1). Led by the energetic Grace Harris with her unbeaten 60-run knock, the Warriorz won the one-sided contest with 26 balls to spare. The result also condemned Gujarat Giants to their third consecutive defeat which sees them languish at the bottom of the table.

Harris leads the charge(UPW vs GG)

Needing 143 runs to win in 20 overs, the Warriorz made a good start to their innings with openers Kiran Navgire (12) and Alyssa Healy (33) putting a 42-run stand. Chamari Athapaththu, on debut, then scored 17 runs to help her side to a comfortable position before Harris took the initiative. She scored an unbeaten 60-run knock which included 9 fours and 2 sixes and was given a good helping hand by Shweta Sehrawat (unbeaten 17) as they marched their way to the win.

Tanuja Kanwar bagged two while Kathryn Bryce and Meghna Singh both ended with one wicket each for the Giants.

Earlier, the Warriorz restricted Giants to 142 runs with Sophie Ecclestone leading from the front with the ball. She ended with figures of 20/3 in her four overs. Rajeshwari Gayakwad bagged the other wicket as the GG never got going with the bat. Phoebe Litchfield was the top scorer with 35 while South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt scored 28 along with Ashleigh Gardner’s 30-run knock.

With the win, the Warriorz are now third in the WPL 2024 standings as they have four points from as many games. The top four are only separated by Net Run Rate (NRR) while Gujarat Giants are bottom with no wins in their three matches. They will need to start winning before other teams create a big margin between them and the rest.

WPL 2024 Match updates

UP will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their backyard on Monday (Mar 4) in what will be the final match in Bengaluru before the tournament heads to Delhi leg. Gujarat next take on last season’s runners-up Delhi Capitals at the same venue on Sunday as they try to break the duck for the season.
