Daren Sammy Confirms “Everybody is Available” Ahead of Super Eight Clash
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!West Indies allrounder Romario Shepherd could make his much-anticipated return in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup against Zimbabwe, providing a timely boost to the Caribbean side. Head coach Daren Sammy confirmed that the squad is fully fit and available for selection, easing concerns ahead of the crucial encounter. The match will be played on the same surface used for the India vs USA group-stage fixture at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, a venue known for high-scoring thrillers.
Shepherd, 31, has been sidelined over the past week but looked sharp in training. Despite visible strapping from his right knee down to his calf, he showed no hesitation in the nets, striking the ball with authority and even clearing the roof during an aggressive batting session. Teammates applauded his powerful hitting, underlining his importance to West Indies’ lower-middle order firepower. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a vital asset heading into the Super Eight phase.
Speaking ahead of the game, Sammy expressed optimism about Shepherd’s fitness. “He practised well yesterday. Bowled quite well, hit the ball very, very cleanly,” Sammy said, emphasizing that having a fully fit squad at this stage of the tournament is crucial. Shepherd had earlier impressed with a five-wicket haul, including a hat-trick against Scotland, but has not featured since February 11. His return would strengthen both the bowling attack and finishing capabilities.
Zimbabwe, led by the experienced Sikandar Raza, pose a spirited challenge. Sammy acknowledged Zimbabwe’s resilience, especially after missing out on the previous T20 World Cup, and praised their passionate supporters. Historically, West Indies have dominated the T20I rivalry, winning three of their four encounters. Their only defeat came 16 years ago in Port-of-Spain, a match Sammy himself played in — alongside former pacer Ravi Rampaul, who now serves as the team’s bowling coach.
As the Super Eight stage intensifies, West Indies will look to capitalize on squad depth and experience. With Shepherd potentially back in action and confidence high within the camp, the Caribbean side aims to start this phase strongly and reinforce their T20 World Cup ambitions.
