Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has reaffirmed strong support for allrounder Cameron Green, indicating he is set to remain a key part of the Test setup despite a challenging Ashes campaign. With Australia’s red-ball season resuming in August, the team management appears committed to investing in Green’s long-term development.

Green endured a difficult Ashes series against England, averaging 24.42 with the bat and 70.75 with the ball. His performances included a series of uncharacteristic dismissals, highlighting a phase of inconsistency. However, team management is looking beyond short-term struggles, focusing instead on his overall potential and proven domestic record.

Since making his Test debut in 2020, Green has featured in 37 matches, scoring at an average of 32.75 with two centuries, while also contributing with the ball. His progress was interrupted by back surgery in late 2024, which kept him out of the 2023-24 home season. During that period, Mitchell Marsh cemented his place as Australia’s primary allrounder.

Despite these setbacks, Green’s first-class numbers remain highly impressive. He boasts an average of 45.52 in first-class cricket, which climbs to 53.38 in the Sheffield Shield. A recent century for Western Australia further underlined his consistency at the domestic level, strengthening the selectors’ belief in his capabilities.

Andrew McDonald emphasized that Green’s performances in domestic cricket clearly demonstrate his quality. He stated that players with such strong Shield records are often ahead of their peers, and it is only a matter of time before that form translates consistently at the international level. He also noted that Green, like any developing cricketer, still has areas to improve.

Australia are also exploring the possibility of playing Green alongside fellow allrounder Beau Webster in the same XI. This combination could provide valuable flexibility in team balance, especially following Usman Khawaja’s retirement, which has opened up changes in the batting order.

Webster made a strong impression in his limited opportunities, including an unbeaten 71 and a three-wicket haul in the Sydney Test. His performance has put him in contention for upcoming series, including the tour of Bangladesh.

McDonald also addressed the pressures faced by Green as a three-format player. Currently part of the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders, Green is navigating the demands of international and franchise cricket. The coach pointed out that expectations for Australian allrounders have historically been extremely high, often requiring them to excel equally with bat and ball.

Interestingly, Green’s performances away from home have been more promising, with a Test batting average of 36.69 overseas compared to 28.96 in Australia. McDonald acknowledged that public perception tends to focus heavily on home performances, adding another layer of challenge for the young allrounder.

Looking ahead, Cricket Australia is set to announce its new central contracts, with a strong emphasis on Test cricket due to a packed schedule starting in August. As part of those plans, Cameron Green is expected to remain a central figure in Australia’s long-term Test ambitions.

With continued backing from the coaching staff and selectors, Green’s journey in Test cricket appears far from over. The belief within the Australian camp is clear — it is only a matter of time before his talent fully translates into consistent performances at the highest level.
