South Africa edged out England in the T20 World Cup Super 8 match on Friday (June 21), winning by seven runs in a tight contest. The win sees South Africa a step closer to the semifinal, having already beaten the United States by 18 runs. Quinton de Kock was the hero of the match for the Proteas, scoring 65 off 38. England were never in the contest, having lost wickets at consistent intervals.

South Africa beat England

Chasing 164 runs to win, England lost early wickets to see them on the back foot with Philip Salt (11), Jos Buttler (17) and Jonny Bairstow (16) returning with low scores. Moeen Ali (9) also failed to produce goods as he also returned without an impact on the scoreboard. Harry Brook (53 off 37) and Liam Livingstone (33 off 17) kept their side in the contest until the final over before England fell short.

Needing nine runs to win off the final three balls, Anrich Nortje bowled superb yorkers to help his side win a huge contest.

With two wins in two Super 8 matches, South Africa are one victory away from booking their place in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024.

What happened in the South African innings?

After an 86-run stand for the opening wicket between De Kock and Reeza Hendricks (19 off 25), the Proteas lost their way and quickly went from 86/0 to 113/4. David Miller (43) and Tristan Stubbs (12) were the only other batters to get into double figures as South Africa batters in the middle order lost their way before getting restricted to 163/6 in 20 overs.

Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for England as he ended with figures of 40/3 in his four overs. Moeen Ali (25/1) and Adil Rashid (20/1) also played key roles in restricting South Africa.
