Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has refuted the recent reports claiming he had reached a verbal agreement to join Liverpool next season. The Portuguese manager had an angry response to the reports and said it was the last time he was addressing concerns about his future. 

Amorim has been in the hot seat to join the English club ever since Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso announced he was not moving to Merseyside to join his former club.

“There was no interview, much less an agreement [with Liverpool]. The only thing we want, all of us here, is to be champions with Sporting, and nothing will change. I’ll say it again: I’m Sporting’s coach. There was no interview with any club, no agreement with any club. I am focused, as always, on defending my club,” Amorim told reporters. 

“Stop with this story. This is the last time I speak about my future,” he added.

What did reports claim?

Amorim’s statement comes after Sky Sports Germany carried a report, claiming that Amorim had discussed a three-year contract to join Liverpool and reached a verbal agreement in principle. The report indicated that returning Michael Edwards had a big say in his signing. 

The Portuguese coach has been a hot pick for several clubs currently looking for a manager. Apart from Liverpool, Amorim has been on Barcelona and Bayern Munich’s managerial shortlist as well. 

Amorim has a release clause in his contract which means if Liverpool want to bring him to Anfield next season, they would have to simply trigger the clause. Amorim can be allowed to leave the Portuguese club for as little as $16 million when the release clause becomes active in the summer. The fee further drops to $10.5 million the following season.

Klopp leaves Liverpool at the end of the season after successful nine years at the helm. The club is currently involved in a three-leg title race whilst challenging for the Europa League where there is a high possibility that Alonso’s Leverkusen could meet them in the final.
