Veteran Peter Siddle rolled back the years while captain Marcus Stoinis starred with bat and ball as Melbourne Stars cruised to an eight-wicket victory over defending BBL champions Hobart Hurricanes at the MCG.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A vintage performance from 41-year-old Peter Siddle set the tone for Melbourne Stars’ Big Bash League campaign, as the experienced pacer claimed figures of 3 for 30 to restrict Hobart Hurricanes to 158 for 9. After winning the toss, Stars skipper Marcus Stoinis opted to bowl first, a decision that paid rich dividends on a lively MCG surface.
The Hurricanes struggled to build momentum after losing early wickets, with Glenn Maxwell striking in the opening over to remove dangerous opener Mitch Owen. That breakthrough triggered a steady collapse, as Siddle and Haris Rauf applied relentless pressure through the middle and death overs. The duo combined to clean up the tail, taking four wickets for just six runs in the final eight balls of the innings.
Ben McDermott stood tall for Hobart, playing a composed knock of 69 after walking in during the second over. He briefly revived the innings with Tim David, but Siddle dismissed David inside the powerplay, once again swinging the match decisively in Melbourne’s favour.
In response, the Stars chased the target with authority and composure. Marcus Stoinis led from the front, smashing an unbeaten 62 off just 31 deliveries, while Campbell Kellaway supported him superbly with 41 not out from 27 balls. The pair ensured there were no late hiccups as Melbourne reached 159 for 2 with 24 balls remaining, Stoinis sealing the win with a towering six.
Stoinis was deservedly named Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round display, which also included impressive bowling figures of 2 for 18. His leadership and form will be a major boost for a Stars side still searching for their first BBL title.
Peter Siddle’s performance was a testament to his preparation and enduring competitiveness. Having first played domestic cricket in 2005, the former Australian Test bowler continues to defy age through tailored fitness programs and match readiness, reinforcing his value as a matchwinner in the shortest format.
Glenn Maxwell also left his mark in the field, producing a sensational boundary-line catch to dismiss Matthew Wade, underlining his reputation as one of the finest fielders in world cricket.
Hobart Hurricanes will aim to bounce back when they face the Melbourne Renegades in Geelong on Sunday, while Melbourne Stars travel to Adelaide to take on the Strikers next Tuesday night, brimming with confidence after a dominant start to their BBL campaign.
