In-form Harper continues his rich run in the Sheffield Shield as Victoria post 222, while Riley Meredith takes 4/53 before Tasmania stumble to 52/4 at stumps.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Victoria seized the early advantage against Tasmania on a dramatic opening day of their Sheffield Shield clash in Hobart, with 14 wickets falling across three sessions. Wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper led the charge with a brilliant 93, helping Victoria recover from an early collapse to post 222 in the first innings.
After being sent in to bat, Victoria were rocked immediately as veteran pacer Jackson Bird struck twice in the opening over. He removed Campbell Kellaway and Blake Macdonald for ducks, leaving the visitors reeling at 0 for 2.
Harper, who has been in outstanding form this season, steadied the innings with an attacking approach. He built a crucial partnership with Matt Short, who contributed a solid 40 before being caught in the gully off Riley Meredith.
Harper looked set for his third consecutive Sheffield Shield century after scoring 119 and an unbeaten 141 in Victoria’s previous match against Western Australia. The right-hander struck 93 off just 115 balls, counter-attacking the Tasmanian bowlers with confidence. Even after being hit on the helmet by a Meredith bouncer on 81, Harper responded aggressively, smashing two consecutive sixes.
However, Meredith eventually got the breakthrough as Harper attempted a cut shot and skied the ball to Beau Webster at deep third. Meredith finished as Tasmania’s most successful bowler with figures of 4 for 53.
Lower down the order, Victorian spinner Todd Murphy added a valuable unbeaten 27 off only 23 deliveries at No. 11, pushing the total to a competitive 222 before Victoria were bowled out in the third session.
Victoria’s fast bowlers then made an immediate impact with the ball. Fergus O’Neill and Sam Elliott rattled Tasmania’s top order, reducing the hosts to 52 for 4 by stumps. Charlie Wakim and nightwatchman Matt Kuhnemann survived the final overs of the day to take Tasmania to the close.
The match carries significant importance in the Sheffield Shield standings. Fourth-placed Tasmania remain in contention for the final, with all teams except bottom-placed Western Australia still in the race.
Tasmania were also forced to play without Test opener Jake Weatherald, who suffered back spasms during training on Wednesday. The left-hander is hopeful of returning for Tasmania’s final-round fixture against Queensland starting March 14.
With Victoria already securing their place in the Sheffield Shield final, the strong opening day performance has put them firmly on top heading into day two.
