Heat complete the biggest chase in BBL history as Renshaw and Wildermuth smash centuries in a six-hitting spectacle
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Brisbane Heat pulled off the greatest run chase in Big Bash League history as Matt Renshaw and Jack Wildermuth produced breathtaking centuries to overhaul Perth Scorchers’ imposing total of 257 for 6 in a record-breaking encounter. In a match that rewrote the BBL record books, Heat chased down the target with one ball to spare, registering the highest successful chase in BBL history and the third-highest in T20 cricket overall, while both teams combined to hit the most sixes ever in a BBL match.
After being sent in, Scorchers appeared to have sealed the contest with a dominant batting display led by Finn Allen and Cooper Connolly. The pair unleashed 14 sixes in a ferocious 142-run second-wicket stand, with Allen blasting 79 off 38 balls and Connolly following up his recent IPL contract with a powerful 77 from 37 deliveries. Despite losing Mitchell Marsh early, Scorchers maintained relentless momentum, with all five Heat bowlers conceding over 11 runs per over and Shaheen Shah Afridi finishing with figures of 1 for 49.
Heat’s chase began inauspiciously when Colin Munro was dismissed off the first ball by Jhye Richardson, and their task became even tougher after captain Nathan McSweeney injured his left ankle while fielding and was ruled out of the run chase. However, Renshaw was given an early reprieve when he was caught off a no-ball on 20, a moment that proved pivotal in the outcome of the match.
Renshaw made the Scorchers pay with a blistering 102 off 51 balls, reaching his century in just 48 deliveries, while Wildermuth delivered the innings of his BBL career, smashing an unbeaten 110 from 54 balls — his maiden century in the competition. The pair combined for a stunning 213-run partnership, the highest ever for any wicket in BBL history, as Heat surged to 131 for 1 at the halfway mark and swung the momentum decisively in their favour.
Despite a late twist that saw Renshaw run out and Max Bryant retire hurt with a shoulder injury, Wildermuth held his nerve to finish the chase, striking the winning runs to spark wild celebrations around the ground. The victory eclipsed the previous BBL record chase of 230 and capped a surreal night of power-hitting in which both teams struck 18 sixes each, underlining the extraordinary nature of one of the most memorable matches in Big Bash League history.
