Defending champions MI Cape Town slump to a fourth defeat, while Paarl Royals boost playoff hopes with a dominant bonus-point victory
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!MI Cape Town’s (MICT) SA20 title defence took another heavy hit as they suffered a crushing loss to Paarl Royals (PR), their fourth defeat in five matches and third at home this season. The result leaves the defending champions rooted to the bottom of the points table and potentially reliant on favourable results elsewhere to stay in playoff contention.
Batting first at Newlands — traditionally a high-scoring venue — MICT were skittled out for just 88, their lowest-ever total batting first in SA20 history and the lowest first-innings score at the ground in a full 20-over match across all four seasons of the league. With half their league games completed, the pressure is now firmly on MICT to string together wins in the remaining fixtures.
Paarl Royals, in contrast, continued their strong resurgence after a heavy opening-game defeat. The comprehensive win lifted them to second place on the table, marked their third consecutive victory, and significantly improved their net run rate as they chased down the modest target in just 13 overs to claim a bonus point.
The turning point of the match came during MICT’s innings, where PR’s disciplined and varied bowling attack never allowed the batters to settle. Sikandar Raza starred with the ball, claiming a superb 4 for 13 on his competitive debut at Newlands, while Ottneil Baartman added further pressure with figures of 2 for 8 in just 2.4 overs. Despite losing three wickets in the chase, PR completed the job comfortably, with David Miller sealing the win in style with a six.
PR dominate the powerplay with the ball
After struggling in several run chases earlier in the season, MICT opted to bat first, hoping to exploit familiar conditions. Instead, they ran into a well-executed PR bowling plan. Bjorn Fortuin opened with spin, Baartman and young quick Nqobani Mokoena rotated effectively, and Raza provided crucial breakthroughs. MICT managed only 33 runs in the powerplay, finding the boundary just twice, and lost both openers early to slump into trouble.
Raza turns the screws
Raza’s impact grew as the innings progressed. He removed Jason Smith for a low score, then followed up with key wickets of George Linde and Rashid Khan in successive deliveries, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick for the second time in two matches. His four-wicket haul underlined his value, taking his tournament tally to seven wickets and placing him among the leading bowlers of SA20 2026.
PR control the chase early
Paarl Royals lost an early wicket when Lhuan-dre Pretorius was bowled by Trent Boult, and Rubin Hermann survived a few nervous moments. However, Asa Tribe ensured there was no late drama. He counterattacked during the powerplay with a series of confident strokes off Boult and Kagiso Rabada, effectively ending the contest early. Tribe’s 34 off 28 balls laid the foundation before Miller finished the chase with authority.
For Paarl Royals, the win reinforces their status as genuine playoff contenders. For MI Cape Town, the defeat deepens the crisis, leaving the champions with little margin for error as the SA20 league stage moves into its decisive phase.
