PM Modi speaks to Team India after T20 World Cup win, lauds Rohit, Virat over massive effort

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the T20 World Cup-winning Indian Team on Sunday morning (June 30) and congratulated the Men in Blue for lifting the world title for the second time. Modi congratulated skipper Rohit Sharma for his splendid captaincy throughout the tournament. He also thanked him for his services to Indian cricket in the shortest format as the veteran batter announced his T20I retirement following the win.

PM Modi also spoke with batting veteran Virat Kohli, the player-of-the-match in the final against South Africa, who scored a brilliant 59-ball 76, congratulating him for stepping up on the D-day and delivering for Team India.

Like Rohit, Virat also announced his retirement from T20Is, and PM Modi thanked the modern-day great for his incredible contribution to Indian Cricket in T20Is.

Virat and Rohit are the two top run-getters in the shortest format and the highest run-scorers in T20 World Cup history. While Rohit won his second T20 world title, the win in Barbados was Kohli’s first.

Besides, the Prime Minister talked to the Player-of-the-tournament, Jasprit Bumrah, for his outstanding performance in this edition. Bumrah was heads and shoulders ahead of everyone in leaving an impact on the game and changing its equation almost every time he came to bowl. Bumrah was instrumental in India winning the final, with two wickets in the summit clash, including the most important of Marco Jansen in the 18th over.

Modi lauds Surya’s catch and Dravid’s role

Another crucial factor that led India to their second T20 world title was Suryakumar’s ‘catch of the tournament’ on the first ball of the final over. David Miller’s shot was almost a six before SKY pulled off a blinder while running to dismiss him and help India win the match by seven runs. PM Modi also spoke with him and lauded him for his match-winning effort. 

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister thanked the departing India coach, Rahul Dravid, for his immense contribution to Indian cricket, more so for guiding the Men in Blue to end the ICC trophy drought. 

With the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas his last assignment as India’s head coach, Dravid won it for the country and will walk away with his head held high.
