The New Zealand speedster, who was signed by Punjab Kings (PBKS), is expected to join the squad later in the tournament.
Speaking in Auckland ahead of the third T20I against South Africa national cricket team, Ferguson revealed his plans to take a short break after international duties. The fast bowler emphasized the importance of being with his family, especially after limited time at home during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 held in India and Sri Lanka.
Despite stepping away briefly, Ferguson reaffirmed his dedication to New Zealand national cricket team, stating he remains eager to represent the side in upcoming global events, including the 2027 ODI World Cup and the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.
PBKS, meanwhile, have strong pace-bowling options to cover for Ferguson’s absence. Australian left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis is likely to step in during the early matches. The franchise also boasts a robust bowling lineup featuring Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Azmatullah Omarzai, Yash Thakur, Vyshak Vijaykumar, and Marcus Stoinis.
Ferguson also hinted at taking a flexible approach to his international future, evaluating his participation on a “tournament-by-tournament” basis. However, he made it clear that his motivation to perform at the highest level remains strong.
Additionally, Ferguson backed the idea of a franchise-based T20 league in New Zealand, highlighting its potential to showcase local talent and elevate the country’s cricketing profile globally.
