Julian Nagelsmann ends speculations of Bayern Munich return, extends contract with German national team

Bayern Munich’s dream of rehiring Julian Nagelsmann were dented on Friday (April 19) after the German manager extended his stay with the national side. Nagelsmann, who was tipped to replace the outgoing Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will now take charge of the side at least until the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. His primary job though will be to lead Germany in the upcoming Euro 2024, which takes place in their own backyard.

Upon signing the new deal, the 36-year-old said: “This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honour to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to carry an entire country along with us.”

He continued: “The two victories against France and the Netherlands in March gave us a taste of what was to come. The enthusiasm of the fans really touched me. Together we want to play a successful European Championship at home, we are all fired up for that. After that, I and my coaching team are really looking forward to the challenge of a World Cup.”

Having previously managed Bayern from 2021 to 2023, Nagelsmann was tipped to return to the club with negotiations ongoing. He was sacked in favour of Tuchel in March 2023, which saw the club face plenty of criticism. On the verge of winning the treble in the 2022-23 season under Nagelsmann, Bayern only ended up winning the Bundesliga on the final day of the season. The 2023-24 season did not have great success under Tuchel after Bayern’s reign as German champions came to an end after 11 years.

Since Tuchel’s departure was announced in February, the 36-year-old was tipped for a return along with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Hansi Flick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. According to a few board members, Nagelsmann was the first choice, but they will now have to turn their attention to other names.

On the other hand, despite being asked to leave the club after the current season, Tuchel can still end up winning the biggest prize in club football for Bayern. On Wednesday he helped Bayern reach the Champions League semifinal after beating Arsenal 3-2 over two legs. Bayern will next face Real Madrid for a place in the final later in the month.
