The experienced batter will feature under the leadership of Ian Holland, who steps in as captain during the absence of regular skipper Peter Handscomb.
Weatherald, 31, arrives in England following a successful run in international and domestic cricket. The left-handed opener made his Test debut during the Ashes at Perth and went on to play all five matches, contributing to Australia’s dominant 4-1 series victory. His selection came on the back of consistent performances in the Sheffield Shield for South Australia and Tasmania.
With a solid first-class record of 5,784 runs at an average of 36.84, including 13 centuries, Weatherald brings both experience and attacking intent to Leicestershire’s top order. His inclusion is expected to strengthen the batting lineup as the club prepares for a competitive return to Division One.
Expressing his excitement, Weatherald said he is “absolutely buzzing” to begin his first stint in county cricket. He highlighted the rich history and challenging nature of the English domestic circuit, adding that he looks forward to settling in quickly and making an immediate impact for the Foxes.
Head coach Alfonso Thomas welcomed the signing, praising Weatherald’s recent form and ability to perform under pressure. He emphasized that the Australian’s aggressive style and competitive mindset will be valuable assets both on and off the field.
Leicestershire’s promotion to the top tier marks a significant milestone, as the club returns to Division One for the first time in 22 years after clinching the Division Two title last season. However, they will begin the campaign without captain Peter Handscomb, who is unavailable due to personal reasons despite extending his contract until 2027.
In Handscomb’s absence, Ian Holland will lead the side once again, having previously captained the team toward the end of the 2025 season. Coach Alfonso Thomas praised Holland’s calm leadership and strong connection with the squad, expressing confidence in his ability to guide the team effectively.
Holland described captaining Leicestershire as a “real privilege” and shared his enthusiasm about leading a tight-knit group of players. He emphasized the team’s strong work ethic and unity, stating his focus will be on maintaining high standards and setting the tone early in the season.
With the addition of Jake Weatherald and Ian Holland’s leadership, Leicestershire will aim to make a strong start in their County Championship Division One campaign, signaling their intent to compete at the highest level of English domestic cricket.
