The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has hit the ground running as teams across the country are stamping their authority on the biggest franchise league in the world. The IPL 2024 which kick-started on March 22 in Chennai has added another feather in its impressive hat as it smashed TV viewership records for the opening 10 matches. IPL is one of the most watched events in the world with audiences from different corners of the world.

“We are overwhelmed with the record-breaking viewing figures for TATA IPL 2024. Disney Star has started the 17th season from where it left off last year, doubling down on fan-centred initiatives that seek to drive passion and fandom for the tournament,” Sanjog Gupta, Head of Disney Star (Sports), said in a press release.
Still in the opening stages, IPL 2024 recorded an attendance of 350 million for the opening 10 matches which is the highest for any previous tournament. Disney Star holds the official broadcasting rights of the tournament and paid a whopping $580 million (Rs 48,390 crore) in 2023 to broadcast the event on TV.
A watch time of 96.28 million (8,028 crore) minutes in the opening 10 matches is the highest ever recorded at the opening 10 matches of an IPL season. The rise is also 20 percent higher than last year’s watch time.

Currently, the IPL 2024 is broadcast in 10 languages including Tamil, Telugu Marathi and several other regional languages.
It is expected that IPL 2024 could break the records for both TV and digital rights with an increasing fan base. Currently, the digital rights are held by Viacom 18 and is also a major player in the IPL and Women’s Premier League (WPL) market.
What is happening on the pitch?
Away from the business side, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have started the IPL 2024 on a high having won all three matches. They remain the only team unbeaten in the opening two matches of the competition. Mumbai Indians on the flip side are rock bottom, having lost all their matches in the IPL 2024 including two close matches against Gujarat Titans and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
