Young pacer impresses with pace and composure in death overs despite GT’s narrow loss to Punjab Kings
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill has praised young fast bowler Ashok Sharma following his promising debut in the IPL 2026 opener against Punjab Kings (PBKS). Despite GT suffering a three-wicket defeat, Ashok’s performance—especially in the crucial death overs—stood out as a major positive.
Making his first appearance in the IPL, Ashok Sharma showcased his raw pace, consistently clocking speeds between 140-145 kph. Although he conceded 26 runs in his first two overs, the youngster bounced back strongly in the latter stages of the match. His 18th over proved to be a turning point, as he gave away just five runs and claimed his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing Marco Jansen with a clever back-of-the-hand slower ball.
Speaking after the match, Gill highlighted Ashok’s potential and work ethic. He noted that while the pacer showed promise with both the new ball and at the death, his growth with experience could make him a key asset for the franchise. Gill also mentioned being impressed with Ashok during pre-season training camps, particularly his ability to swing the new ball and maintain discipline.
The dismissal of Jansen briefly put Punjab Kings under pressure, leaving them needing 16 runs off the final two overs. However, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett held their nerve to guide PBKS to victory.
GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel also expressed confidence in Ashok Sharma’s abilities. He emphasized the youngster’s pace, athleticism, and mental strength, especially his ability to recover after an expensive start and deliver a tight over under pressure. Patel added that performances like these reflect Ashok’s strong character and hint at a bright future ahead.
Ashok Sharma ended his debut match with figures of 1 for 31 in three overs, marking a solid start to his IPL career. With continued opportunities and experience, he is expected to play an increasingly important role in Gujarat Titans’ bowling lineup this season.
