Donovan Ferreira’s all-round brilliance and Richard Gleeson’s nerve under pressure seal SA20 thriller at the Wanderers
The first tied match in SA20 history delivered a New Year’s Day classic at a packed Wanderers Stadium, where Joburg Super Kings held their nerve to defeat Durban’s Super Giants in a tense Super Over finish. After scores were level at the end of regulation play, England seamer Richard Gleeson stepped up under pressure, conceding just five runs in the Super Over. That total proved far too small to defend, even for a bowler of Noor Ahmad’s quality, as Super Kings sealed their third straight win of the competition.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Super Giants had appeared firmly in control late in the chase, needing 19 runs off the final 12 balls with two proven finishers at the crease. However, a breakdown in communication swung the momentum dramatically. Evan Jones, who had reignited the chase with a blistering 43 off 17 balls after Heinrich Klaasen’s dismissal, was run out attempting a risky second after being sent back by David Wiese. Donovan Ferreira reacted sharply behind the stumps, completing an under-arm relay to Gleeson, who then struck immediately with a pinpoint yorker to bowl Wiese on the very next delivery.
Ferreira’s influence extended well beyond the closing moments of the game. Walking in during the 18th over, he produced a brutal finishing display, smashing 33 not out off just 10 balls as Super Kings plundered 47 runs from the final 12 deliveries. His assault included two fours and five sixes and was perfectly complemented by Shubham Ranjane, who compiled an unbeaten 50 off 31 balls after working his way through a slightly scratchy start.
Earlier, Ferreira had also made his mark with the ball, delivering neat off-breaks to return figures of 1 for 24, while Noor Ahmad nearly stole the contest for Super Giants with an outstanding spell of 3 for 12. Noor removed Matthew de Villiers to break an 89-run opening stand, beat Faf du Plessis with a ripping wrong’un that crashed into the top of off, and later dismissed Wiaan Mulder as he ballooned a catch to Kane Williamson at extra cover. On most nights, that spell would have been enough to earn the Player of the Match award, but this proved to be Ferreira’s night as he dominated proceedings with bat, ball, and gloves.
The drama intensified in the final over as Mulder struggled to defend 15 runs. Ethan Bosch whipped a high full toss over deep square leg before Mulder conceded two wides while attempting wide yorkers. With seven needed off the final two balls, Simon Harmer muscled a boundary straight down the ground to level the scores. Off the final delivery, Harmer missed completely, but Ferreira remained ice-cool behind the stumps, hitting the stumps directly to force the game into a Super Over.
Super Giants’ chase had earlier been revived by Jones, who used his local knowledge of Wanderers conditions to devastating effect. The Johannesburg-based Lions batter tore into Duan Jansen for a match-turning 22-run 16th over, following it up by punishing offspinner Prenelan Subrayen for 15 in the previous over. Jones was well supported by Aiden Markram, who found fluency after a slow start and steadied the innings following Klaasen’s dismissal, but their efforts ultimately fell short as Super Kings prevailed in a thrilling contest.
