Lahore Qalandars penalised five runs against Karachi Kings as Fakhar is charged with a Level-III offence; hearing to decide one or two-match suspension
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Lahore Qalandars batter Fakhar Zaman could be handed a suspension of up to two matches after being charged with ball-tampering during a PSL 2026 clash against Karachi Kings. The incident, which occurred during Qalandars’ narrow four-wicket defeat on Sunday, has sparked widespread debate across the Pakistan Super League.
According to an official PCB statement, Fakhar has been booked for a Level-III offence under PSL’s code of conduct. This carries a minimum penalty of a one-match ban and could extend to two matches for a first offence in the season. Match referee Roshan Mahanama is set to conduct a hearing within the next two days, where Fakhar is expected to contest the charge.
The controversy unfolded at the start of the final over of Karachi Kings’ chase. On-field umpire Faisal Afridi called for the ball after it had passed between Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman. Following a detailed inspection and consultation with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula, the officials deemed the ball to have been tampered with and opted for a replacement.
As per PSL playing conditions (Clause 41.3), the umpires are authorised to inspect the ball at any time and take immediate action if its condition appears to have been altered unfairly. Karachi Kings were awarded five penalty runs, a decision that significantly impacted the outcome of the match.
The replacement ball was chosen by the batting pair of Khushdil Shah and Azam Khan from a set of balls with varying wear and tear, in accordance with Clause 41.3.5.1. Additionally, Clause 41.3.5.3 mandates a five-run penalty if a team is found responsible for changing the condition of the ball.
The penalty proved decisive, reducing Karachi’s target from 14 runs to nine in the final over. Abbas Afridi capitalised on the advantage, hitting a four and a six off Haris Rauf to seal victory within two balls.
Interestingly, Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi expressed uncertainty about the decision during the post-match presentation, stating that the team would seek clarification from the match officials.
In a separate incident, Karachi Kings pacer Hasan Ali was fined 10% of his match fee for a Level-I offence related to his celebration after dismissing Haseebullah. His actions were found to be in breach of Article 2.5, which covers gestures or language that may provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter.
With Fakhar Zaman now awaiting the outcome of the hearing, the PSL 2026 season faces yet another moment of controversy, raising fresh questions around on-field conduct and enforcement of cricket’s laws.
