Denmark’s Christian Eriksen completed a magnanimous comeback story with his 17th minute goal in the Euro 2024 clash against Slovenia on Saturday (June 16). This was Eriksen’s first goal in the continental championship after nearly 1,100 days and suffering a cardiac arrest in the last edition. The 32-year-old’s goal gave Denmark a lead which the team sustained throughout the first half.Â

The footballer had collapsed on the pitch in the first half of the match against Finland back in 2021. The Euro 2020 was shifted an year ahead due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Eriksen was attended by medical staff immediately after collapsing on the pitch during the game. He was then shifted to a nearby hospital after getting the CPR by Danish medics.
The national team’s doctor had confirmed that the midfielder had to be fully resuscitated from the cardiac arrest. The footballer spent nearly nine months away from the field.
Upon his return in March next year against Netherlands in an International friendly Eriksen scored a goal in Denmark’s 4-2 loss. He then played in the FIFA World Cup 2022 but Denmark couldn’t advance form the group stage.
As a results of his cardiac arrest, Eriksen is now fitted with an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). The device isn’t approved by Italian football league Serie A and hence Eriksen’s contract in the league was cancelled. He was part of multi-time Scudetto champions Inter Milan in Serie A.
Eriksen then joined the English Premier League (PL) side Brentford on a six-month deal. The PL doesn’t consider an ICD as violations of its playing condition.
He was given a standing ovation by fans in his first PL appearance for Brentford when he came on the pitch in 52nd minute as a substitute during the game against Newcastle.
“If you take away the result, I’m one happy man. To go through what I’ve been through, being back is a wonderful feeling,” he had said after the game.
