Australian cricketer Adam Zampa has opened up on the reason for not playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season as he now prepares for fresh challenges with the national side. Zampa, who was set to play for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2024, opted to stay away from the duties as he felt drained after the ODI World Cup 2024. The Aussie spinner was an important member of the squad that beat India in the final of the World Cup and wanted time away from the game.

“There are several reasons why the IPL wasn’t for me this year. I think the most important one was the fact that it’s a World Cup year and I’m completely drained from 2023,” Zampa said. “I did the full IPL last year. Obviously, the World Cup was three months in India as well.

“So I had the best intentions of trying to play the IPL again this year. But once push came to shove, I felt like I just couldn’t really offer the Rajasthan Royals the best version of myself and looking forward to the World Cup, that’s what’s more important to me, that’s for sure,” he added.

Zampa has been a busy player in recent months and has played in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Melbourne Renegades. He was Australia’s top wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup with 23 while also playing a vital role in their tour to New Zealand back in February. Considering workload management, Cricket Australia (CA) also rested him in the T20I series against India in November.

Considering another year of busy action, Zampa had a choice to make whether to play in the IPL 2024. However, he opted to withdraw from the tournament with the T20 World Cup also on the horizon in June.

As a first name on the team sheet during the World Cup, Australia will look to make the most of his services.
