Chamari Athapaththu produced an impressive all-round performance to guide the Sri Lanka women’s national cricket team to a four-wicket victory over the West Indies women’s national cricket team in the second match of the three-game Women’s T20I series. The win gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the series after the opening match was washed out due to rain.

Athapaththu played a crucial role with both bat and ball, scoring a quick 39 runs off just 26 deliveries and picking up 2 wickets for 13 runs. Her aggressive batting helped Sri Lanka build early momentum in the chase of a modest 102-run target.

Sri Lanka got off to a flying start thanks to a 62-run opening partnership between Athapaththu and Hasini Perera. However, the hosts staged a comeback as Sri Lanka suddenly lost six wickets for just 29 runs, bringing the match back into contention. Qiana Joseph and Afy Fletcher claimed two wickets each for West Indies, but an unbeaten 18 from Kavisha Dilhari ensured Sri Lanka crossed the finish line with 11 balls to spare.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka’s bowlers delivered an excellent performance after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Malki Madara and Nilakshika Silva both picked up three wickets each, while Athapaththu added two more to restrict West Indies to just 101 runs. Captain Hayley Matthews was the top scorer for the hosts with a patient 28, but only four batters managed to reach double figures.

The West Indies innings ended in an unusual manner when Karishma Ramharack was dismissed for obstructing the field on the final ball. This marked the second such dismissal on Sri Lanka’s current tour, following Deandra Dottin’s similar dismissal in the second ODI earlier in the series.

With the series now finely poised, both teams will face off in the third T20I on Tuesday. Sri Lanka will be aiming to secure the series victory, while West Indies will look to bounce back and level the contest.
