Matthew Short starred with bat and ball, but Brisbane Heat held their nerve to edge past Adelaide Strikers in a tense BBL clash

Brisbane Heat showcased their composure under pressure with a superb defensive effort at the death to secure a gutsy victory over Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba, despite a concerning knee injury to spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi. The win marked Heat’s second of the season and underlined their growing reputation as a side capable of defending totals in high-pressure situations.

In a nervy finish, debutant Thomas Balkin emerged as the unlikely hero, claiming two crucial wickets in the final over to shut the door on the Strikers’ chase. His calm execution sparked jubilant scenes among the Heat players as they closed out a match that ebbed and flowed throughout the night.

This was the first match at the Gabba since the record-breaking run-fest on December 19, when Heat and Scorchers piled up a combined 515 runs. While the same surface was in use, this contest offered a far more balanced battle between bat and ball, keeping the outcome in doubt until the final moments.

Batting first, Brisbane Heat struggled for momentum early, as the Strikers’ disciplined and varied bowling attack applied the brakes. Hasan Ali was particularly impressive, navigating tough phases to finish with 2 for 36 from his four overs. Heat were reeling at 98 for 5 before Max Bryant produced a counter-attacking knock of 63 off just 32 balls, rescuing the innings and lifting the total to a competitive 179.

In response, the Strikers’ chase was checked early by Shaheen, who found swing and rhythm with a probing opening spell that included sharp yorkers. His initial burst highlighted his improving form after a quiet start to his BBL campaign. Once Shaheen’s threat was seen off, Matthew Short took charge, smashing consecutive sixes to inject momentum and move ahead of a struggling Chris Lynn.

Lynn’s scratchy stay ended on 22 from 24 balls when he lofted a return catch to Xavier Bartlett, who soon added Mackenzie Harvey to his tally. Bartlett was in the thick of the action again, safely holding a high catch at long-on off Matthew Renshaw’s part-time spin to remove Liam Scott.

Short remained the key figure for the Strikers, bringing up a well-made half-century and threatening to take the game away from the Heat. However, the momentum shifted dramatically after Shaheen limped off with a knee injury following the 14th over, leaving the Strikers without one of their most trusted death bowlers.

The absence of Shaheen proved costly. Although Jerrssis Wadia launched a brief assault during the power surge, the Strikers lost 4 wickets for just 12 runs at a crucial juncture, including Short, who holed out to long-on off Bartlett for a fine 63 off 39 balls. With 10 runs required from the final over, Balkin held his nerve, dismissing Harry Nielsen on the penultimate ball to seal a memorable win.

Earlier, Heat’s innings had also seen moments of promise and frustration. Jack Wildermuth, a hero in a previous Gabba classic, departed early, while Colin Munro was bowled by Luke Wood. Renshaw looked fluent again, continuing his strong form, but was undone by Short’s offspin just as he threatened to dominate.

Ultimately, Max Bryant’s power-hitting and Xavier Bartlett’s all-round impact proved decisive, as Brisbane Heat once again demonstrated their ability to defend under pressure and outlast their opponents in a gripping Big Bash League encounter.
