The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is exploring plans to launch a continent-wide T20 tournament, modelled along the lines of the Asia Cup, in a move aimed at boosting both the profile and finances of cricket across Africa. While the concept has received encouraging support, particularly from key stakeholders, the proposed Africa T20 Cup is unlikely to debut before 2027.

At the centre of ongoing discussions are two critical aspects: identifying a suitable window in the crowded international calendar and finalising a clear qualification structure. Both factors are heavily dependent on the participation of South Africa, the continent’s strongest and most commercially significant cricketing nation.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has expressed interest in the Africa T20 Cup in principle. However, it remains cautious due to scheduling constraints. With South Africa’s calendar packed from September through February 2027 under the current Future Tours Program (FTP), CSA is awaiting further clarity on the next FTP cycle before committing to sending a first-choice squad.

The new FTP, expected to be finalised following upcoming ICC meetings and released before November 2027, will outline international commitments for the next five years. Its structure will play a key role in determining whether top teams like South Africa and Zimbabwe can fully participate in the Africa T20 Cup.

As part of the build-up to the proposed tournament, CSA is in discussions with Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) to feature in a tri-series, potentially including Namibia. The series, likely to be held in August at the newly built Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls, could serve as a curtain-raiser for the Africa T20 Cup. Although currently planned as an ODI series to align with preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, it is expected to generate early interest and funding for ACA initiatives.

Recent developments indicate growing cricketing collaboration within the region. South Africa toured Zimbabwe for Tests in 2025 after an 11-year gap and also participated in a T20 tri-series featuring New Zealand. Additionally, a South African side played in Namibia to mark the inauguration of the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek, underlining increased regional engagement.

These efforts align with the broader build-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. While South Africa is set to host the majority of matches, Zimbabwe and Namibia will also play key roles as host nations.

For the Africa T20 Cup to succeed, the involvement of Full Members such as South Africa and Zimbabwe will be crucial. The ACA hopes that the tournament, inspired by the success of the Asia Cup, will not only generate revenue but also accelerate the development and visibility of cricket across the African continent.
