The upcoming white-ball series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates from March 13 to 25, is likely to be postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing military conflict in West Asia. The escalating situation in the region has raised serious concerns about travel safety and logistics, prompting both cricket boards to reconsider the scheduled tour.

Although neither the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) nor Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has released an official statement yet, reports suggest that both boards have mutually agreed that hosting the series in the UAE under the current circumstances is not feasible. Discussions regarding possible alternatives are ongoing, but relocating the series to another venue appears unlikely because of tight scheduling and logistical challenges.

The bilateral series was set to feature six white-ball matches, including three T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The T20I matches were scheduled to be played in Sharjah on March 13, 15, and 17, while the ODI fixtures were planned for Dubai on March 20, 22, and 25.

This series was also expected to mark an important milestone for Afghanistan cricket, as it would have been the first assignment under newly appointed captain Ibrahim Zadran, who recently took over leadership duties from Rashid Khan following Afghanistan’s group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup.

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has already disrupted several cricketing events and travel schedules. Recently, six matches of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Nepal, involving Oman, UAE, and Nepal, were postponed due to the same crisis.

In addition, the travel plans of multiple international teams have been affected. Several teams that participated in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka have faced difficulties returning home due to restricted or closed airspace in parts of West Asia. For instance, the squads of West Indies and South Africa, who were eliminated earlier in the tournament, were stranded in Kolkata and only recently received confirmation that they would be able to fly out on Tuesday.

With the regional situation still uncertain, cricket administrators are closely monitoring developments before taking a final call on the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka series. The decision highlights how geopolitical tensions can directly impact international sporting events and travel arrangements.
