Kolkata Knight Riders continue to do more rights than wrongs as they inch closer to sealing the playoff spot in IPL 2024 following a comfortable win over Delhi Capitals at the Eden Gardens on Monday (April 29). The hosts delivered an all-round show to seal a seven-wicket win and do a double over DC this season, having beaten them at Vizag earlier in the tournament.

Delhi won the toss and elected to bat first, with KKR captain Shreyas Iyer admitting they wanted to chase anyway.

Delhi openers Prithvi Shaw and in-form Jake Fraser-McGurk began with a flurry of fours before Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora reduced them to 37 for three inside four overs.

Abhishek Porel and Captain Rishabh Pant tried reviving DC’s innings, but Harshit Rana’s tactics broke the stand. All-rounder Axar Patel hit a couple of fours to help the cause, but regular wickets broke DC’s back.

Eventually, it fell to the bowlers to bail them out, mainly the bowling mainstay, Kuldeep Yadav, to save the sinking ship with the bat in hand. The left-hander gave his best shot, scoring an unbeaten 35 off 26 balls, but couldn’t prevent KKR from stamping their authority.

For the hosts, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy had a memorable outing, returning with three wickets for 16 runs.

Salt to the rescue

Phil Salt has been on a song this season, delivering yet again in a crucial win over a confident Delhi side. The opener smashed another fifty inside the Powerplay, hitting 68 off 33 balls, including five sixes and seven fours. The opening partnership with Sunil Narine helped KKR release the pressure upfront as they calculated the chase with utter ease.

Although Axar Patel was among the wickets, removing both openers, Lizaad Williams contributed, picking Rinku Singh’s wicket.

The two Iyers, Shreyas and Venkatesh, kept the scoring rate intact and went after the target. While Shreyas scored an unbeaten 33, Venky remained not out on 26, as KKR beat DC by seven wickets to sit in the second position on the points table with 12 points.
